October 31, 2002 on 12:30 am | In Blogger | No CommentsI just typed a really long blog and then accidently hit cmmd and v, pasting something else in. I’m not really in the mood to type it all up again.
My condolences to anyone affected by the UA shootings. My prayers go out to you tonight~

October 30, 2002 on 1:56 am | In Blogger | No CommentsBleh. More homework today.
Well, okay, I’ll start with Core. Professor Aisenberg (one of the two lecturers today) started his lecture in a little, semi-nerdy voice (I think he’s a science professor or something), saying, “Now, I want you all to not shuffle your bags ten minutes before noon today! Since there are two of us, we might go a little over, and I want you to be there for every little word! I also want to remind you that I finished my Rousseau lecture ten minutes early, so I think it’s only fair that you wait ten minutes if we need it.” What a funny guy. Many of us did not shuffle at the end of the lecture, though a few who walked in late and did not hear Aisenberg’s little speech did shuffle. They come in ten minutes late, they leave ten minutes early…I guess that leaves them with 2/3 the lecture then…
Lunch with Mandy, Sarra, and Katie…
Art 141 was fun, but got a little tedious at the end. 25 kids. 10 jpegs each. 2500 jpegs to view. Four classes to do it. Professor Macko is determined for all of us to get a fair critique on all 10 of our jpegs. Oh well, I think it’s helping, because it’s bringing our intuitive design approach into consciousness. I’ll put up my wordplays in my website once I have them critiqued.
Writing 50 was…well, not fun. We turned in our homework, we got a lecture, we got even more homework! Arrrgh it never ends. Though Kelly did point out to me that Writing 50 only meets 11 more times, so that’s a good thing.
Dinner was…well, alone, since I got out of Writing 50 late, and we had a case of confusion with where Talya was…
I got back in my dorm, sat down for 10 minutes, and then went over to the meeting about Preview Day. Last year we had something like 60 students spending the night at Scripps; this year we have 94. We also will be having 144 students visiting on Preview Day, meaning there will be close to 300-400 people on campus this Friday—nearly half our student body. Steffany Perez is overwhelmed, but happy to see that more people are choosing Scripps. Kelly and I said we’d take as many as two students apiece, so we might be a tight house on Thursday night. I think we’ll all have fun, though—I shouldn’t be having much homework that night, and I think this event will go over pretty well. I also signed up to have breakfast and tea on Preview Day so I can answer parents’ and students’ questions about Scripps or the Claremont colleges in general. Kelly signed up to help by going to the airport between 3-5p to greet our incoming prospective students who are flying in from far-away places. I hope the event is a success, that the weather is right and we attract lots of students. I still can’t believe we’re having that many come!
This evening was dedicated to studying for a Calc I midterm—we have three this semester, so this will be the second one down tomorrow. I did take a study break around 9:30 with Becca, Camille, and John for snack. We had fried zucchini and a banana. When I finished my banana (we were sitting outside in Seal Court, on a plaster bench), I kept tossing the peel in front of unsuspecting passerbys. I’d go, “HA!” and toss the banana peel right in the person’s path. The person would stop, look down at the banana peel, give me a weird look, and step over it. Then he or she would walk away laughing. Camille, John, and I thought we were being funny. I did it to about three or four people before we grew tired of the game, realized how much work we had to do, and went back to the dorm~

October 29, 2002 on 2:57 am | In Blogger | No CommentsSo, my day went something like this:
10:30awoke up. Read Xenocide in bed until the alarm went off.
11:45aLeft for math with Camille. Professor Chaderjian reviewed with us for our math exam that will happen on Wednesday. I still feel screwed.
12:50-1:15pLunch. Another Monday, another lunch consisting of mac and cheese, an eggplant parmesian sandwhich, salad, and some Coke.
1:15p-4:30pRead for Core and Writing 50. I had something like 150 pages of reading to do (no exaggerations!)
4:30-5:30pWorked on the annotated bibliography for Writing 50. I hope I did everything right, because you don’t get credit if you didn’t do more than two things right for each citation.
5:30-6:30pDinner with Camille, Becca, and Mandy. Sarra and Katie were at dance.
6:30-8pFinished my Writing 50 (the annotated bibliography and an essay).
8p-9:06pthe voice! Eh, at least I got paid for that one…
9:07-11pWorked on Art 141.
11-11:15p: Took a study break with Mandy to go to the Motley.
11:15p-2aFinished Art 141. Realized I did at least 10 hours of homework straight tonight.
Welcome to college.
Oh well, I’m doing what I want to do, and I got a lot of satisfaction tonight in knowing I got it done when I thought I was attempting the impossible.
When I hear a classical music piece, I hear stories in my head. I see stories of princesses falling in love with peddlers who turn out to be far away princes. I see dragons beckoning us to fly with them. I see a maidon lamenting for her soldier fiance who is overseas. I see angry kings battling with their enemies from far away lands. I see happiness, and I see sadness. I see love, and I see hatred. I see war, and I see peace. I see…music. I see art~

October 27, 2002 on 10:51 pm | In Blogger | No CommentsAnother day, another blank blog template to fill. I love you all! That’s why I do this blog~
This morning I set my alarm to go to 9:30 mass (since we had to watch a video for Core at 7p, I decided to go to mass in the morning rather than skip it, aren’t I a good girl). After mass, Emily and I had brunch with the Catholic community. Everyone in there is so sweet!
Kelly’s been playing Celtic music this weekend. It’s sooo pretty.
After brunch, I did homework and laundry. I took a study break and called my Jessie-chan! Yay for Jessie-chan, who is COMING THIS FRIDAY! :dances: I’m so excited. John and Camille and everyone want to take her to watch the filming of The Cat In the Hat at Pomona (the city, not college). That should be fun. I dunno what else we’ll do, but it’ll be good, whatever we do, even if it’s just catching up with each other.
Dinner was good…
Then we watched a rather disturbing movie for Core, called, The Battle of Algiers. I thought it was good, quite powerful. It’s one of those movies you can only view once though, since it’s so draining. Mandy had me take Teddy to watch it. Teddy didn’t like the movie at all, it was too violent for him! They recommend you watch it twice before the lecture, but I think once is quite enough, thank you very much. Besides, I have a voice meeting tomorrow when they’re showing it again.

Paul Wellstone, a wonderful man and a senator from Minnesota, died today in a plane crash with his family.
What an indifferent universe we live in.
Ack, blogger is down, so I’m typing this on Word tonight.
I spent the afternoon in the library, researching. Jolly.
Everyone today has been trying to explain to me Daylight Savings time. And for the life of me, I just can’t get it.
So, Kelly, explain this to me again. We set back our clocks one hour?
Yes, Talya. One hour.
WHOA, WHOA, whoa, whoa, wait just one minute. One hour?
One hour.
WHOA, WHOA, whoa, whoa, wait just one minute. We set back our clocks one hour?
One hour.
WHOA, WHOA, whoa, whoa. Say again why we do this?
Just because.
Similar conversations ensued today with John, Camille, Becca, Mandy, and Katie as well. One hour? I don’t get it, but I did it just now. Thank God my iBook resets its clock itself, otherwise I’d be really confused.
Kelly bought an adorable harvest crest thingie from the Crafts Fair today. I really like it! We put it on our door.
After dinner I called Mom, that was lovely. I didn’t want to hang up, but I had to catch Katie’s concert at eight, so I did. That was so beautiful! Everyone did a wonderful job. Professor Huang played the piano gorgeously, so relaxing. I enjoyed myself.
After that, we all hanged out in the kitchen for a few hours, talking, laughing, giggling over freshly baked cookies and tea. John and Camille carved a Halloween pumpkin while we talked.
Then Emily and I went over to Emily’s dorm and watched The Never-Ending Story while attempting Henna on each other. Although we weren’t too great at Henna, we had a wonderful time, and enjoyed hanging out with each other to no end. Emily’s really cool, she’s from New Mexico and is just one of those people you like to know~

What Type Of Anime Character Are You?
brought to you by Quizilla
Well, that was fun.
Math was okay this morning. I like that class too much to complain.
After math, Camille and I grabbed food for the dorm. Then I made use of Camille’s tv to watch this thing Professor Macko gave our discussion group (two people plus I will be leading a discussion in Art 141 about women bodybuilders, and plastic surgery this Thursday). The video was entitled Pumping Iron II: Women in Bodybuilding. I found the video fascinating. You see, women in bodybuilding—they look like mini Arnold Schwarzineggers. But, that’s just it. In femaile bodybuilding competitions, women are not judged simply on how many pounds of weightlifting they can bench, but to what degree the women are as feminine…in other words, they need to be muscular, but they need to have curves and a rack. The judges treat them like Barbie bodybuilders or something. Quite chauvenistic, if you ask me.
So, the video focuses on three women. The first and probably the most intriguing is one woman from Australia named Bev, and by default, she should win. She has the biggest muscles; she is known as the strongest woman in the world. The second woman, Rachel, is American, and she’s pretty well-balanced in body shape, but she’s pretty as well. She has good hair and good muscles. The third contestant is this woman from New Jersey who has good muscle tonage but happens to be pretty as well. So, although Bev should have won, the truth is, she finished last in the finals, and 8th in the overall competition. Rachel finished third because shewas wearing an illegal swimsuit for a few of the events and lost points there.
The girl from New Jersey won.
After that, I worked on Writing 50 for awhile…then we went to dinner. Dinner was delicious tonight—they catered from a sushi bar and had a guy sitting there making sushi for all of us. I had some of the vegetarian-style. I also had some cheesecake and salad—yum!
After dinner was probably the highlight of the evening. We went to a Halloween costume ball at Pomona. Camille, Becca, Katie, Sarra, and I all dressed in the pretty Rennaisance dresses Camille’s mom brought over (Elizabeth took pictures, so I promise you’ll be getting some!), and we all fit in just perfectly with all the costumes. I think the best part of the evening was when I got to tango to The Phantom of the Opera with Matt, who is this amazing dancer. However, I danced with quite a few guys, even though tangoing to Phantom of the Opera was the best part. I learned tonight to beware of the Vietnese Waltz.
After the ball, we went over to a party at Mudd. We met a few nice CalTech guys, who all seemed very sweet.
Jessie’s coming in only a week! I can’t wait, I can’t wait, I CAN’T WAIT!!!

October 25, 2002 on 12:57 am | In Blogger | No CommentsDeepinder requested that I mention him on my blog tonight, so here I am. Mentioning Deepinder. Right. I think I’ll write a short poem about Deepinder, just because he’s worth it:
Deepinder, Deepinder, he’s a crazy kid.
Deepinder, Deepinder, I think he popped his lid.
He’s Canadian, therefore he rocks.
And he likes Christmas socks [viz.]
Deepinder, Deepinder, we all love, Deepinder.
Deepinder, Deepinder, he’s my dearest Deepinder!!!
I could almost put a tune to that…
I downloaded the new Mac version of AIM last night—so exciting. I did not realize that combined with Mac and PC buddy lists, I have 102 people on my buddy list, but apparently I do. I’m sure most of the sn’s on my list are repeats, though, just not sorted properly. Quite frankly I didn’t realize I knew half that many people.
I can already picture Lynn and Deepinder laughing at my puny buddy list in the background…:bangs fist on desk: FOOL!
Core was nothing too exciting…lunch with Sarra and Katie went well.
In Art 141 we watched Gattaca (lol I’m loving the allusion in the name to adenine, thymine, guanine, and cytosine) by Niccols. Talk about mind-fuck movies! If you haven’t seen it yet, I strongly recommend you do. I don’t think I should say more except—go rent it!!!
Writing 50 was a good lecture. We’re learning about 19th century science versus 19th century religion, which is a very interesting topic. At this time, people are starting to discover dinosaurs and are reading publications such as Darwin…people’s notion of God, for the first time ever, is being challenged. Interesting.
I think Dr. Retseck is athiest though. Not that that’s a bad thing, but just something I was unclear on up until this point in the semester.
After dinner, I mostly worked on homework. There was a study break with a theme, “birthday parties!” that was cool…free cupcakes. Math is good~

October 24, 2002 on 12:20 am | In Blogger | No CommentsI’m stealing Cristal’s lyrics she posted on her lj:
I’ve got my arms tight
Tight around you
You’ve got my heart crushed
Crushed beneath you
My hands too hesitant to touch
Touch
Touch you
My eyes say too much I’ll hide
Hide them from you
I compare
I compete
I’m jealous
I’m jealous of everything
Even water has more beauty
Than I could ever ever hope for
You’re one star
You burn my lips when I breathe in
Breathe in
Breathe out
You’re one man
You turn my stomach when I fall in
Fall in
Fall out
Time is a blade
I dunno who wrote it, but it’s cool.
Going back to Core I this morning was depressing, but whatever. Actually today wasn’t so bad…just Core and math. I went to Professor Chaderjian’s office hours…it turns out her mom died last week, which was why she was out. She was still pretty upset when I talked to her during office hours. I promised her I’d keep her in my prayers. Will you all pray for Professor Chaderjian’s mom and her family as well?
I came back and did some Writing 50. It feels like for every hour I spend on another class, I spend about three hours on Writing 50. That thought depresses me.
Tea was good…we had cake and hot chocolate. I sat down with Becca and Katie. That was cool.
Then I did MORE Writing 50. :smashes fist on desk: FOOL!
That’s the new thing I’ve taken to saying. Whenever someone or something displeases me, I bang my fist on the desk and shout, “FOOL!” It’s something Mandy’s friend taught me.
Dinner was VERY good. They added more variety to their salad bar, and Camille and I were so excited! I had the greatest salad, ever—tangerines, organic leafs, nut thingies, raisons, cherry tomatoes, mushrooms, and Oriental sesame topping. It was delicious.
Then I went to the voice meeting. We have stories coming up, so exciting.
Errk. Right now I’m looking at the Tucson postcards which I put up next to my “Footprints” poster. They comfort me.
After the voice was a mandatory hall meeting. Basically they just wanted to give us a heads-up about the J-Dub dedication this Saturday. It’s supposed to be a big event, since Scripps doesn’t really get the chance to dedicate buildings that often. All the maids, gardeners, and maitenence are working rigorously to get our dorm in top, prime condition for when Ms. Gabrielle Jungels-Winkler, the J-Dub architect, and many Scripps alumnae visit Saturday morning. There will be a lot of people in our hall, and tours as well. I’ll probably stick my head in, but it’s really not that long an event, it really only goes until 11:30 because brunch is in Mallott until 1p, then it’s over. We’re supposed to yell at people if they don’t abide by Scripps’s escort policy though…
It’d be funny if I had to yell at the architect or Jungels-Winkler.
After the hall meeting, we had a Study Break. The theme was Alchohal Awareness. We tried on drunk goggles and had virgin—something, I don’t know what.
And that, my friends, is the most drunk I’ve ever been.
I then worked insanely on Writing 50, and am now insanely done. I think I shall celebrate by defragmenting my computer~

October 23, 2002 on 12:22 am | In Blogger | No CommentsI can hear footsteps down the hall again! And doors slamming! And sinks from down the hall! And on occasion, courteous whispers! Our dorm is back again! This entire weekend, it’s been eerily quiet. I mean, our dorms are nice and quiet usually, but they’re not EERIE the way they have been. There were, I think, seven people in the dorm this Fall Break, and that was just creepy. I think I was the only one on my floor. It feels good to have everyone back.
I spent this morning working on Photoshop, as well as this afternoon. That was fun. While I was just about to puzzle over how to turn in all my assignments in the Drop Folder, Professor Macko walked in, and she helped me SO MUCH by showing me how to do it. I love Scripps! I mean, that’s the advantage of a small, liberal arts college—not only did my professor know me by NAME outside the class, she also was willing to help me on her day off. I was quite impressed, and walked out with a grin on my face.
Between my euphoria and dinner, I called Jessie and Tasha. While talking to Tasha, Mandy came by and said hi to me…she’s back from home! Much shrieking ensued…poor Tasha heard only us shrieking and hugging each other; it must have sounded very funny on her end. After that occured, I talked to Jessie. She seems jolly! Well, a little dead, because she was working on an essay all afternoon XP. Oh wellz.
Then I said hi to Kelly! It was great to see her face again—the dorm was getting a little lonely without her! So, I was glad for that. It sounded like Kelly had a good time as well.
After that, we went to dinner (”we” being Mandy, Lisa, Katie, Sarra, and me). Mallott reopened. That was jolly. I got my mac and cheese back. We’re thinking that on Preview Day on Nov. 1, we might set up one of our Harvey Mudd friends (e.g. Grant or Dan), and get him to walk casually down our campus. Then, we thought it would be funny to get Lisa to exclaim, on the top of her lungs, “A MAN!!!!” from a distance. Then, we were thinking we’ll all run down the campus and chase him all the way through the Preview Day events. THAT would be a great scene/prank on the prospees. Haha!
I got a $10 rebate in the mail today from Memorex. At first, when I checked my mailbox, I was puzzled. What did Memorex want with me? Then, I opened the letter, and found—a check for $10 floating out of the envelope. I started jumping up and down and shrieking, “I GOT $10!!!!” Rebates are fun. It’s somewhat similar to reaching in your winter coat pocket that has been in the closet all summer and finding a 10 or 20 dollar bill~
Then I talked on the phone with the family, did some Core reading and some math, then Mandy and I attempted to go to snacks, but it was closed today. So, we had Tang in the kitchen instead. Then I read a bit of The Demon-Haunted World, and then I went downstairs with the group to try on Camille’s mom’s Renn. dresses for Halloween! They’re so gorgeous. I’ll be putting pictures up, soon.

October 22, 2002 on 3:45 am | In Blogger | No CommentsSometimes it feels like I’m bookmarking a new blog or live journal on my favorites list daily. Well, it’s cool…I think my “blogs” subtitle on my favorites list finally overtook my Misc. list. That was quite an acheivement then…
I spent the morning reading Xenocide in bed…I love doing that!! When I eventually got up, I had some food down in Camille and Katie’s dorm, then went over to our library for working on a research paper. Okay, I thought Main Library back home was big. I thought Nanini had a decent selection. But I would say, neither come close to the size or content of Honnold/Mudd library. It has seven sublevels, three floors, and a basement—all stuffed with books. The basement has those turny-bookshelves that make room for even MORE books, as if they need it. Right, so there I was, desperately turning bookshelves in hopes of finding Carl Sagan’s The Demon-Haunted World, when I realized, the book I came for is located in Sprague (Mudd’s library). But, I thought I could find some periodicals, so I went over to the MUDD section of the library (the other half of this seven-layer building), over to the basement, found a few periodicals, and two books. Then, I left with a headache. I felt so overwhelmed by all the resources Honnold has, and the books I was trying to find were hidden. It was like being on a bizarre scavenger hunt.
I then went over to Sprague for The Demon-Haunted World…Sprague is cool. It is a five-story building with elevators that take you up and down all the levels of books…it’s very vertical, and the books are arranged more or less vertically on the shelves as well.
Then Rachel invited Camille, Katie, and me to have dinner with her and her roommate, Madina. We ate over at Pomonas dining hall (well, one of the two), which was quite an experience. The food was not exactly sumptuous, but at least it was different.
At Frank, we met up with Mike, one of Katies Mudder friends. He came back to the dorm with us to play some cardsApple to Apple, Set, BS, and Xactica. John came over and joined us, too. That was quality. After that, Grant and Rachel invited me to Mudd, so I went over. We played on Spencers Dreamcast and got in a conversation about speaking Anglican versus speaking British.
Happy birthday, Mom! When I called her, it was while Mike, Katie, and I were playing cards. It was weird…I almost ran upstairs in my dorm to make the call, but I knew if I did, I’d choke up or something. So, I called her downstairs, while in a group. If anything solves homesickness, it’s the whole group thing~
