How easily I move from New York to New Jersey to Boston to Seattle to Tucson to Canada to back to Claremont as I browse from blog to blog before going to bed.

Strange…and no, that’s not directed at anything in particular.

My nails look sweet. Especially considering I’ve never really done anything coolish with nail polish at all.

The fire seems much better–well, at least the sky does. It rained this morning, and I was really cold all day (meaning it was hot for all of you weirdos). Emily kept laughing at me because she doesn’t understand that 60 degrees is in fact winter at some points of December in Arizona. But it was refreshing to enjoy some cold weather…

Talya: I had a nightmare last night…I guess this’ll sound childish, but aliens live under my bed…
Kevin: Justin lives under my bed, and that’s almost as scary…

At Lindy tonight we learned a new swing move called the Lindy Circle. Basically during a drumroll in a swing dance song you spin around and around and around as fast as you possibly can until you’re very dizzy but you keep spinning because the drumroll is still going and you go faster and faster and yeah, it’s kind of like that, except faster. And if you let go of your partner you go spinning out a few times (a few people tried that, myself included).

But yeah, Tatsu was teaching us this move, and we practiced spinning and spinning for about 20 minutes, and we were all so freaking dizzy it was like being drunk or something but I’ve never been drunk, so I wouldn’t know. And Tatsu would stop us in the middle of it and say something like, “okay, when you sp—I mean…oh, shit, just a sec” :rubs head: “….anyway, make sure you’re stepping very lightly or you’ll look really stupid…”

Then we’d start the step again and go even faster this time and I’d spin out totally dizzy and the girl next to me would fall to the ground and then we’d get up and giggle about how this certainly beats Core reading and then we’d do it again.

And yeah. It’s kind of like that.

[Arunima had two midterms earlier in the morning; Mandy walks in.]
Mandy: Hey, everyone!
Everyone: Hey!
[pause]
Arunima: So, Mandy, are you going to ask me?
Mandy: Ask you what?
Arunima: What do you mean, ask me what? Come on!
Mandy: Was I supposed to ask you something? I’m confused…
[Betty walks in.]
Betty: Hey, everyone!
Everyone: Hey!
Betty: How’d your midterms go, Arunima?
Mandy: OOOH! I’m sorry, I totally forgot!
Arunima: Geez! See, some friend you are, Mandy. Right, way to care about me. Thanks for nothing. [turns to Betty] They went fine, Betty, thanks for asking.

Today involved the usual Monday busyness. In the morning Priya and I completed our LHC project (shhh), then Spanish was saddish. Professor Lin Schull got 3 hours of sleep because she was running around with the fire all weekend and broke her toe in the process of helping one of her friends evacuate. So, class is cancelled for tomorrow ’cause she wants to recooperate. Lunch and all that was uneventful…then Lin Alg, I just know Bradley is going to pounce on us soon, be it a quiz, midterm, whatever. It would be nice if we had a syllabus with set dates, but whatever, maybe I should be happier in ignorance.

Let’s see…then I took a nap, did more lin alg, then went to art. In art Professor Cho TOTALLY made my art project about 100 percent better, so now I’m happy with my project. And it was great because she kept coming around and was like, “wow, Talya, that looks so much better!” when she passed me by. It made me feel happy. And I also did well on both projects that occupied my last few weekends, so that was good.

voice was uneventful…then I stopped by and chatted with my mentees, who were panicking over their Core I midterms. Poor things. They’ll all be fine though; it’s sometimes funny to see how they differ in terms of work ethic–some were planning to stay up all night studying when they really don’t need to; others were going to bed by the time I got to them, and yet still some were only just starting on the readings (or planning to, anyway…). So yeah, it’s fun.

Oh yeah, I should probably let you know that my sister’s in-laws, the Tedeschi’s, had to evacuate their house, so if you could say a prayer for them if you’re the praying type, I’d appreciate it.

I guess I owe you guys a fire update. My inbox has been flooded with emails from DOS claiming that everything is under control, meaning that everything is out of control and they have no idea what’s going on. I guess it almost felt like home from over the summer, and I was taken back to memories of Breelan and me at work and me asking her for an update on her house after she evacuated.

The Grand Prix fires are about two miles from the school. We’re not evacuating because there is a highway blocking the road and the firefighters are getting it contained. But seriously, Claremont has become Mordor from LOTR. There is smoke everywhere, the sky is red, and you can hardly see the sun (and if you can it looks like a dark red moon).

And there is ash everywhere. Ash falling from the sky, ash on the ground, in your hair as you walk around, and in your eyes. We’re advised to wear masks or wet scarves while walking around outside, and Chloe got the LHC girls masks. They help, but it still stinks here. I’ve been mostly sitting in my room with the air conditioning on high, and it’s been making me rather stir-crazy (and cold and crabby because I hate air conditioning). A couple of our professors who live up north had to evacuate their houses, and I wouldn’t be surprised if they lost their houses as well.

Whoever started this fire is a real asshole.

Us: How did you hurt your finger?
Chris: It got stuck in a blender.
Us: Ouch! How did you do that?
Chris: I was being dumb. I had my hand in the blender and was lazily stroking the blade, and then I thought to myself, “hmm I wonder what the ON button does?” and then with my hand still in the blender I pressed the ON button.
Us: So you put your hand in the blender and pressed the ON button?!
Chris: Yeh, well, it was more complicated than that!
Us: Doesn’t seem to be…
Chris: All right, fine…so, I put my hand in the blender and turned the blender on. There you are. And that, my friends, is the second dumbest way I’ve cut myself.
Us: Second?!
Chris: I’ll leave the first dumbest way to your imagination…

and I say BAH TO THE HUNTLEY BOOKSTORE! BAH! A GIANT POX ON YOU BEAUROCRATS! Okay, here’s the newest low:

Me: I need white acryllic paint for my art class.
Associate: All right, we have white acryllic paint for sale in the art kits which cost $95.
Me: I don’t need the art kit, as I have my art supplies. I’m just running low on white.
Associate: All we have are the art kits.
Me: Well, last time I was here the guy who helped me sold me some black paper out of the art kit–do you think you could just do the same with the acryllic paint?
Associate: Oh, no no no no, I’m afraid we couldn’t do that! Who sold you the paper that way?
Me: I didn’t catch a name.
Associate: Well, that’s too bad…yes, too bad….:goes off muttering about how people can’t do things like consider that they just want to SAVE CUSTOMERS’ TIME BY SELLING THEM WHAT THEY NEED!: :forgets about the fact that I’m still standing there in need of white acryllic paint:

So, now I have to wander around Claremont in search of white acryllic paint. The nearest art supply store is in Montclair. I don’t have a car. Bring it on.

I took two naps today. I’m still tired.

Blah, I’ve got much to do this weekend. Eh, it’ll get done, it always does. Mandy always says, “small baby steps at a time!” and I guess she’s right for this too.
