If I had a song for this semester’s beginning so far, I think it would be “Numb.” Just the instrumental part, how it starts out all slow and then speeds up a bit but keeps that trembling chord. That one chord, over and over. Lyrics don’t really apply, unless you applied it to schoolwork :)

It was nice having Kat here to study with me tonight…she is good company, sitting quietly on my bed doing topology….and Priya and I left the suite door open, so it really did feel like an analysis renunion. Especially since we were all doing math, even if it was all for different classes.

And I like walking with Mandy the long way to the Motley and spending time with Kevin solving Yoshi Cookie puzzles or watching Family Guy. And I like random IMs from Deepinder and Joey. And reading amusing away messages about whose birthday it is today or MacBeth allusions about sleep.

Friends rule.

Chris showed me a pretty nifty thing for math PhD folks: http://www.genealogy.ams.org/ . Basically it takes all the people who were students of whoever and traces them back to so many mathematicians. You can trace Chris’s degree back to Gauss, but he and Anie are both stubs (meaning they’ve had no students with math PhD’s). Hey math majors, we should fix that :)

So, not too much is new in the non-math world….I’m happy for the weekend. But I have to work tomorrow (blah….it’s back to working in the mornings for me, ’cause I like to do nothing Friday afternoons).

Phew, that was the most frustrating Abstract Algebra homework set, ever, with really easy proofs (yay!) and this one horrible, frustrating problem that wouldn’t die. I eventually killed it though.

So, apparently I put poor Chris “on the fence” by not being able to grade….:guilt guilt: But I did tell him that I’ll try it if no one else volunteers….I dunno, I just don’t want to be too busy again! As Summer says, 8 hours of sleep is a good thing!

I had an enjoyable weekend. Friday and Sunday afternoon I did Benjamin work, and Saturday afternoon involved CS. Kevin and I watched Akira and Garden State, and Mandy, Summer, Kevin, and I went to Target and 21 Choices on Saturday night….all in all, quite fun. I also had a lovely talk on the phone with Caitlin….I miss you, Caitlin!!

I’ve had such an amazing week! I moved into my new room (Kim 209, you better stop by–yeah, that means *you*), and just love it to death. It’s so restful and peaceful, I can definitely make this place my happy home, especially with Priya, Lina, Amy and Betty as my neighbors! I really do miss Mandy and Summer though–luckily we’ve been meeting up a lot ’cause I’d be sad if not.

Classes should be good, a little on the tough side, but at least the due dates for all my problem sets are nicely spread out so I won’t be going crazy one night in the week. I also have some amazing news: Professor Benjamin will have the Mathemagics book and The Art of Mental Calculation Book I published by the end of this semester (probably in March)!!! And yes, we’ll be using my designs and everything. The books will be by print-on-demand, and if they get popular enough on amazon.com and whatnot, we’ll let a publisher pick them up. I’m just so happy about that! It does mean another thing though–I’M ON A MAJOR DEADLINE! Eep. But I’ll pull through, as I have a million times on my newspaper staffs.

Priya has plans to start a math forum, so that’ll be great! I might tutor there one night a week, or will, rather.

So sorry I haven’t blogged in awhile, but there’s a quick catch-up with my life…I miss my Tucson friends a lot and hope you’re all doing well too!

My accomplishment for the evening :) I also emailed some people for permission to use some of Kara’s artwork, so we’ll see if we can spice up the article with images….and maybe if I’m feeling bored some time, I can add to the article, but it’s definitely a start :)

Today Mom and I saw Meet the Fockers, and I visited with Sabb and Kelsey (Caples). Two fun endeavers :)
